Foster carer training

Whether you’re completely new to foster care, or have years of experience, our training and support meets you where you are, complements your existing skills and equips you to make a life-changing difference to a child or young person. And the more training and experience you gain, the more children, you can help.

Learning your way

Our mixed learning approach means you can organise your training around the needs of the children you care for. Choose from a combination of ‘in the room’ group courses, and online training through nationally recognised providers.

Skills to Foster

We’re here to build your confidence, and give you the skills you need. Our Skills to Foster programme is a comprehensive induction plan, starting in your assessment process, and facilitated by a social worker and an experienced foster carer.

Our training programmes

We’re great believers in sharing new learnings and proven techniques to create better outcomes in the real world. Our training covers contemporary issues such as the Impact of Abuse and Neglect, Attachment, Child Sexual Exploitation, Domestic Violence and the Role of Social Media in young people’s lives.

Our programmes cover three levels of foster carer training: Essential, Extra and Expert, each with experienced social workers and independent subject experts, such as child psychologists.

Developed by Kings College London, Fostering Changes is a 12-session, nationally recognised, social learning programme for our foster carers, promoting positive outcomes for you and the young people you’re caring for.

Professional development

By your first annual review, you’ll have completed your induction training and received a personal learning and development plan. You can then choose to undertake vocational training, gaining more skills and confidence to meet the needs of children in your care.
