Types of fostering
Some children and young people are placed with foster carers for a short time, whilst others are placed on a long term basis. There are many types of fostering that you will wish to consider. Here are a few explanations:
Emergency
This can be overnight and with little warning
Temporary fostering
This can be anything from a few days to a few months or longer
Permanency
This is planned and the child/ young person can be in place up until adulthood
Respite
This can be a weekend or 1-2 weeks while a child is in foster care. Their full time foster carer may request a short break from looking after them so the child will stay with another approved carer for respite.
Pre-adoption
A child will remain in foster care while waiting to be adopted
Bridging
Adoptive parents have been found for the child and they will stay in foster care until ready to move to permanent adoptive home.
Remand
A child is placed in foster care as an alternative to being placed in remand (eg a juvenile detention centre)
