"Ready for a new challenge" Joy & Stephen's story

12-07-2012

Joy and Stephen Mountford from Nantwich made the decision to foster four years ago after they helped their two adult daughters set up their own homes.

The couple had always thought about fostering but never made the initial step. They were finally inspired to become foster carers after seeing an advert for Fostering Solutions in the local paper. “We had just bought a new house and our children had both moved on and so we found ourselves ready for a new challenge,” Joy explained.

“The whole family has been behind our decision to foster and they get involved as often as they can. It can be difficult at times, especially as some children often have emotional or behavioural problems. As carers and a family we love welcoming these vulnerable children into our home and sharing a loving family environment with them. It’s very rewarding to see these children move past their issues and to move on with our help love and support.”

“The most important thing for us is that we work as a team. Myself, Stephen and our two adult daughters all work together to make sure that we provide the children who come into our care a stable, loving and structured environment.”

So far the couple has fostered 18 children and have no plans to stop.
“Our advice to anyone who is considering fostering is to go for it and give it a shot. There is a huge support team around you who become not only friends but extended family. They are there for you when needed for advice or someone just to listen.”

“Even if you only foster one child knowing the difference you have made to their life both now and in the future – is huge. It’s a great thing to do and we would recommend it to anyone!”
